5 Questions to Ask Before Getting Fitted for a Prosthetic in Bangladesh
Getting fitted for a prosthetic limb is one of the most important decisions you'll make after amputation. Most patients in Bangladesh don't know what questions to ask. Here are five questions that separate the good clinics from the rest — ask them everywhere you go, including at ours.
Getting a prosthetic limb is one of the biggest decisions you'll make after amputation. It affects how you walk, how you work, how comfortable you feel every day for years. And yet, most patients in Bangladesh walk into a prosthetic clinic with no idea what to ask or what to look for.
We want to change that. Whether you end up coming to Endolite Bangladesh or going somewhere else entirely — these are the five questions you need to ask at any prosthetic clinic.
1. "How many patients have you fitted with this type of prosthetic?" This isn't rude to ask. It's essential. Prosthetic fitting is as much art as it is science — especially the socket fabrication and alignment process. The experience of your prosthetist directly impacts the quality of your fit and your outcome.
Ask specifically: How many below-knee fittings? How many above-knee? How many microprocessor knees have you fitted? The answers tell you how much real-world experience exists in the clinic.
At Endolite Bangladesh, we've fitted over 300 amputees since 2008 — below-knee, above-knee, bilateral, upper limb, partial foot. That depth of experience shows up in how quickly we identify the right approach for each patient and in the quality of our socket fabrication.
2. "What rehabilitation and gait training do you provide?" Getting a prosthetic leg is not like buying a pair of shoes. You can't just put it on and walk out the door. You need structured gait training — learning to walk with your new prosthetic limb, building up muscle strength, developing balance and confidence.
Ask specifically:
- Do you provide gait training on-site?
- How many days does the training typically take?
- Who does the training — a qualified physiotherapist or someone else?
- Is gait training included in the prosthetic cost, or charged separately?
- Where do patients stay during training? Can patients from outside the city stay at your
facility?
At Endolite Bangladesh, patients stay at our facility during the entire gait training period. Our physiotherapy team works with you daily until you can walk confidently and safely. This training is included in the prosthetic cost — not an extra charge.
3. "What does aftercare cost — and what exactly is included?" This is the question most patients forget to ask upfront, and it's the one that matters most over time.
Your prosthetic will need adjustments. Your residual limb will change shape. Components wear out. Sockets need replacing.
The question is: who pays for all of that?
Some prosthetic clinics in Bangladesh charge for every follow-up visit, every socket adjustment, every alignment correction. Over 5-10 years, these aftercare costs can equal or exceed the original prosthetic cost.
At Endolite Bangladesh, aftercare is free for the lifetime of the patient. This includes:
- Socket adjustments when your limb changes shape
- Alignment corrections
- Gait re-training if needed
- Routine maintenance and check-ups
You pay only for replacement components if something wears out (e.g., a worn foot or knee joint) — and only the component cost, never a service fee.
4. "Can I speak to other patients you've fitted?" Nothing beats hearing from someone who has been through the prosthetic fitting process. Ask the clinic if they can connect you with a former patient — ideally someone with a similar amputation level, similar age, and similar lifestyle.
A clinic that's confident in its results will encourage this. A clinic that hesitates or refuses? That tells you something.
We actively facilitate this at Endolite. Our patients are often happy to share their experience — the honest version, not the marketing version — with someone about to start the same journey.
5. "What are all my options, and what do you honestly recommend for my situation?" Watch out for two red flags:
- The clinic that pushes only the most expensive option (more revenue for them)
- The clinic that offers only basic options (because they don't carry advanced components)
A trustworthy prosthetic clinic will:
- Explain all available options clearly, from basic to advanced
- Be transparent about pros, cons, and trade-offs of each
- Recommend based on your clinical needs, activity level, and budget — not their profit
margin
- Give you time to decide without pressure
At Endolite Bangladesh, we carry everything from standard mechanical systems to the most advanced microprocessor knees available. We recommend what's right for you, even when that means suggesting the less expensive option.
Frequently Asked Questions
Bring: your medical records and surgical notes, any X-rays or imaging of the amputation site, a list of medications you take, a referral letter from your surgeon if you have one, and wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your residual limb. Also bring a family member — having support during the consultation helps. Is prosthetic fitting painful?
The fitting process itself should not be painful. You may feel pressure during the test socket fitting, which is normal — the prosthetist is finding the right balance of snugness and comfort. If anything causes pain during fitting, tell your prosthetist immediately. Pain during fitting is a signal that something needs adjustment, not something to endure.
