Orthotics & Braces

Orthotics in Bangladesh — Who Needs Braces and Supports, and What's Available

Orthotics aren't just for athletes. From foot drop and polio to arthritic knees and spinal conditions — custom braces and supports help thousands of people in Bangladesh walk better, stand straighter, and live with less pain. Here's what's available and who it helps.

When people hear "Endolite," they think prosthetics — artificial limbs for amputees. That's a major part of what we do. But there's another side of our work that's equally important and helps just as many patients: orthotics.

What's the Difference Between Prosthetics and Orthotics?

This is one of the most common questions we get, so let's clear it up:

  • Prosthetics replace a missing body part. If you've lost a leg, arm, finger, or other body part,

a prosthetic is the artificial replacement.

  • Orthotics support, correct, or protect a body part that is still there but isn't functioning

properly. Braces, splints, supports, and specialized footwear are all orthotics.

Both require custom fitting by qualified professionals. Both can be life-changing. They just solve different problems.

Who Needs Orthotics in Bangladesh?

Foot drop patients. If you've had a stroke, peripheral nerve injury, or spinal cord condition that causes your foot to "drop" when you walk — dragging or catching on the ground — an ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) is the standard treatment. The AFO holds your foot at the correct angle so you can walk without tripping or falling.

Polio survivors. Bangladesh still has a significant population of adults who contracted polio in childhood. Weakened leg muscles often require a knee-ankle-foot orthosis (KAFO) to provide the stability that muscles can't, allowing patients to stand upright and walk who otherwise couldn't.

Patients with arthritic knees (osteoarthritis). Osteoarthritis gradually damages the knee joint cartilage, causing pain, swelling, and instability. Custom unloading knee braces shift mechanical load away from the damaged compartment of the knee, reducing pain and potentially delaying the need for knee replacement surgery.

Spinal conditions. Scoliosis, vertebral fractures, post-surgical spinal recovery, and disc herniation — many spinal conditions benefit from external bracing. Thoraco-lumbar-sacral orthoses (TLSOs) and lumbar-sacral orthoses (LSOs) provide support and limit harmful movement during healing.

Diabetic foot patients. Diabetes-related neuropathy causes loss of foot sensation, making patients vulnerable to pressure ulcers and injuries they can't feel. Custom diabetic footwear and orthotic insoles redistribute pressure, protect vulnerable areas, and prevent the foot complications that lead to amputation.

Children with developmental conditions. Cerebral palsy, clubfoot, and other paediatric conditions often respond well to early orthotic intervention. Custom-molded AFOs and other devices guide musculoskeletal growth during critical developmental windows.

Custom Orthotics vs. Pharmacy-Bought Braces You can buy generic knee braces and ankle supports at pharmacies across Dhaka. So why come to a specialist clinic?

Generic (off-the-shelf) orthotics:

  • Made in standard sizes (S, M, L)
  • Designed for general use and mild issues
  • Not adjusted for your specific condition or body shape
  • May provide some symptom relief but limited functional improvement

Custom orthotics from a specialist clinic:

  • Molded from a cast of your specific body part
  • Designed to address your exact condition and its severity
  • Can provide precise correction, support, or offloading where needed
  • Modified and adjusted over time as your condition changes

The outcome difference is substantial. A generic pharmacy knee brace might reduce pain somewhat. A properly designed, custom-fitted orthotic knee brace — calibrated for your specific knee alignment and damage pattern — can dramatically reduce pain, improve walking stability, and extend the functional life of your knee.

What Endolite Bangladesh Offers in Orthotics Lower limb orthotics:

  • AFOs for foot drop (stroke, nerve injury, polio)
  • KAFOs for more severe leg weakness (polio, paraplegia, spinal cord injuries)
  • Custom knee orthoses for ligament injuries and osteoarthritis

Advanced orthotic knee joints:

  • E-Knee — a microprocessor-controlled orthotic knee joint that provides electronic stance

control

  • Full Stride and Safety Stride — dynamic stance control knee joints that lock automatically

during weight-bearing and unlock for bending Spinal orthotics:

  • LSO and TLSO braces for back pain, vertebral fractures, post-surgical support, scoliosis

management Diabetic foot care:

  • Custom diabetic footwear with therapeutic insoles
  • Gel Care products: diabetic gel socks, digital pads and caps, heel pads and cups, toe

spreaders

  • Protective foot care designed to prevent the ulceration that leads to amputation

Frequently Asked Questions

For mild, temporary issues (a minor sprain or general support), off-the-shelf options from a pharmacy may be sufficient. For chronic conditions — foot drop, polio, osteoarthritis, diabetic neuropathy, spinal problems — custom orthotics provide significantly better outcomes in terms of pain relief, functional improvement, and long-term joint protection. The upfront cost is higher, but the clinical benefit is substantially greater. Can orthotics help with knee pain from osteoarthritis?

Yes. Custom unloading knee braces are specifically designed to shift mechanical load away from the damaged compartment of the knee joint, reducing bone-on-bone contact and associated pain. Combined with physiotherapy and medical management, orthotic knee bracing can improve walking ability, reduce medication dependence, and delay the need for surgical intervention.
